Open 24/7 365

All open. All the time. Here are the apps we use to make the show. Thanks to all the great contributors out there. With out them we would not be able to do this.

Cinelerra

The professional grade video editor we use for the show.

The GIMP

Everyones favorite image editor.

DVGrab

DV capture utility.

Audacity

Audio recording and editing.

GEdit

All purpose text editor. Puts notepad and wordpad to shame.

XVidCap

Live motion screen capture utility for X.

Drupal

Drupal is one of the most popular content management systems. It runs this website and of course is Open Source.

Ubuntu Server

I recently started using Ubuntu Server as the distro for webserver itself. So far so good.

The only video podcast done entirely with FOSS

With all due respect, you aren't the only ones doing a Linux/FOSS video podcast done entirely with open source software. If you haven't, check out http://wftlbytes.com -- done with Kdenlive, or Kino, whichever amuses me that day. -- Marcel (Writer and Free Thinker at Large) Gagné

Serving up videos

Hey,

I'm actually putting together a webcast-type setup using a _very_ similar stack:

Cinelerra (May do some video work with Blender, we'll see when the next version is released)
GIMP, Inkscape, Blender
ArdourGtk
WinFF (for conversion into something Cinelerra can use)
Ubuntu
Drupal

(And I was looking for something to do vidcaps with, so XVidCap is perfect, as well as VO's, so Audacity may just be what I want). :)

... So I thought that was rather interesting.

My question to you is this: What service do you use to serve up videos and how costly is it? I haven't quite gotten to the stage where I will be putting them up yet, but I _am_ looking around, so any thoughts would definitely be appreciated.

Thanks! M

re: Serving up videos

Mikkel,

I use Internet Archive for hosting the various formats of my shows. It is free (as in beer) and they are big proponents of free software, but the interface is a bit lacking and I haven't found a good way to track my downloads yet. I also use Vimeo for my streaming version. Vimeo also lets users download the video from their site. Blip.tv is also a good choice. Good luck with your show!

I think these editors help

I think these editors help us to modify videos.Basically we use them to make our task as simple as possible. I have use one of the editor to edit video of http://www.bigrock.in/.

Video editing

Hi. loved your work and the open source concept.
I'm a video editor, I tried moving to linux several times in the past few years. couldn't find a reliable and advanced app for pro video editing among the Linux open source apps. every time and again I went back to linux and inspected some of the apps available at that time and was forced to go back to my old platform.
Is Cinelerra mature enough these days? can it compete with commercial apps like avid or premiere or final cut or edius etc? is there any other app that reached that stage? and, most importantly, are there any good sources for learning it seriously in a reasonable time?
Thank you very much.

Re: Video Editing

Omer,

Cinelerra certainly works for me and I think it's as good as Final Cut or Premier, just not as many plugins, etc. You can check out my tutorials in the "episodes" link above.
