I got an IPod Nano last week. Yes, it rocks (literally). The first thing I tried was to load
GeexBox on it. No luck ... yet :). I can confirm that all the stories about how easy it scratches are true. I think this is amplified by the fact that it's so small. When your display is only 1 inch x 1 inch the smallest scratch is going to look huge. Anyway, it was clear that I needed to have a case for it. I checked out the wares in some of the chain stores, but I couldn't find anything I liked for less than $40. After looking around online a bit I saw
this on
hackaday and I had to give it a try.
Everything you need to create an Orbit case. Template, scissors, Orbit gum case, exacto knife(s), packing tape, small piece of wood or cardboard, and of course an IPod Nano.
Template applied.
After cutting.
A box of Orbit gum just happens to be the same width as a roll of packing tape.
Finished product.
As you can see, I modified the bquach.com design slightly by adding windows for the screen and controls (I am going for cheap and not stealth). Packing tape on both sides of the windows works great for protection and the tape is the same width as the Orbit box. However, I found that it was difficult to get a clean transfer without finger prints or dust getting on the sticky side of the tape (Notice the dot in the upper left corner of the display from a random particle). Luckily, the tape does not impede the ability to shuffle through songs, etc.
All in all it was pretty easy to do and took less than an hour. I still need to add a little foam since the Orbit box is slightly larger than the Nano, but I am looking forward to some interesting comments at work tomorrow. :)
